Nordic Magnesium is a palatable pelleted supplement with fast and high absorption for horses showing signs of magnesium deficiency

Magnesium is one of the bodys most important minerals, an activator of many enzymes and, among other things, is necessary for nerve and muscle function as well as the heart and blood vessels. Magnesium is an essential nutrient and must therefore be supplied in the daily feed ration.

The most common symptoms in horses that are deficient are changes in behaviour, such as nervousness, anxiety and tension.

There is also believed to be a link between magnesium deficiency and insulin resistance. It is seen that horses showing external signs of insulin resistance, such as fat deposits along the crest, at the tail head and behind the shoulders, lose the external signs of IR within a couple of weeks after starting magnesium supplementation. High blood sugar and elevated insulin levels associated with excess sugar intake also reduce magnesium absorption.

Horses on spring grass and autumn grass often also lack magnesium, as at these times of year there is usually explosive grass growth, and the grasss increased content of potassium and sugar inhibits magnesium uptake. It is assumed that the horses magnesium uptake at these times of year can be halved. You cannot reduce the effect of potassium; on the contrary, it can be amplified if there is also a sodium deficiency. Therefore, in spring and autumn we recommend combining Nordic Magnesium with Nordic Sea Salt.

Nordic Magnesium is also supplemented with vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is fundamental in the formation of red blood cells and in transporting oxygen to active muscles. B12 therefore plays a major role in the process of energy production and oxygenation. This supplement is extremely important for sport horses because it is the only vitamin that can be excreted via sweat.

Vitamin B12 is also crucial for normal nerve function and the central nervous system, as it maintains myelin, the protective sheath that surrounds the nerves. Without sufficient myelin, the nerves cannot communicate properly with each other. Even a mild deficiency of vitamin B12 can affect the nervous system and proper brain function.

B12 is the only B vitamin that is not present in the horses natural diet (plants), but is normally produced by the gastrointestinal microflora in a healthy horse. However, mental and physical overload as well as a poorly functioning digestive system increase the need. In humans, an increased need is also seen in those who take the medicines metformin or omeprazole.

Use:

  • For nervous/sensitive horses with a deficiency of magnesium and vitamin B12
  • For horses that have issues with metabolism/hormone levels/fat deposits
  • For horses in hard training or horses that are transported a lot
  • For horses that sweat a lot
  • For horses with muscle tension
  • For horses on spring grass/autumn grass
